NKY Politics has Congressman Davis’ statement on Monday’s State of the Union address.
This evening in his State of the Union speech, the President touched on some of the most important issues facing our nation. From the economic stimulus package to maintaining our nation’s security, Washington needs to focus on the issues that impact our families and small businesses.
…
As the Second Session of the 110th Congress moves forward, we face a long list of unfinished business for the American people, including: securing our borders and immigration reform without amnesty, providing affordable health care coverage for all Americans, achieving greater energy independence, reforming federal homeless assistance programs, restoring fiscal responsibility to Washington and protecting our nation from those who wish to do us harm. I am committed to working with my colleagues in Congress to achieve meaningful results for Kentucky’s Fourth Congressional District.”

The Enquirer reports on lawmakers’ reaction to the Delta merger talks.
WASHINGTON - A merger between Delta Air Lines and either Northwest Airlines or United Airlines hasn’t even been announced, but talk is already starting to swirl around Capitol Hill.
Lawmakers don’t officially have a role in the regulatory process concerning mergers - that is handled by the Justice Department’s Antitrust Division.
But the House and Senate Judiciary committees have oversight of the Justice Department, giving them the ability to investigate and examine any proposed deals or antitrust issues. In that capacity, their opinion can influence financial backers and thus have a big effect on whether the deal moves forward.
House Judiciary Chairman John Conyers, D-Mich., and Rep. Jerry F. Costello, D-Ill., chairman of the aviation subcommittee, are said to be considering hearings - if or when a merger is announced. Rep. John Mica of Florida, the top Republican on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee also wants hearings on any proposed deal.
Meanwhile, Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky’s lawmakers are bracing for a fight.
…
Rep. Geoff Davis isn’t on the Transportation or Judiciary committees, but has a big interest in a potential merger since the airport is in his district.
Last week, the Hebron Republican released a public statement about the reported merger talks, describing how last year he worked with Delta employees to defeat a hostile takeover bid by US Airways. “Any potential merger should undergo the same thoughtful scrutiny as the US Airways proposal,” he said.

Two Boone County fire districts have been awarded grants by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
The Hebron Fire Protection District is receiving $71,397 and the Point Pleasant Fire Protection District is getting $34,718. Both fire districts will use the money to purchase personal protective gear.
Hebron Chief Bill Martin said the district has been in the process of attempting to replace much of its personal protective equipment that consists of gloves, helmets, coats, pants, hoods and boots. He said the gear is “relatively inexpensive per unit but collectively it’s a lot of money.”
The office of U.S. Rep. Geoff Davis, R-Hebron, announced the grants on Jan. 2.
“I applaud the leaders of these organizations for their proactive efforts to secure funding through the Assistance to Firefighters Grants program,” Davis said in a statement. “Fire departments and emergency response organizations across the Fourth District could benefit from similar grants and I urge them to contact my office if we can assist their efforts.”

Bruce Lesley, President of First Focus, and Darla Griffin, Program Manager of Northern Kentucky Housing and Homeless Coalition, penned an editorial recently discussing the heart wrenching realities that face homeless children in Kentucky. The editorial concludes by stating:
“Rep. Geoff Davis, R-Ky., has been a champion for this underrepresented population. In Washington, he is doing everything possible to cut through the legalese in order to provide homeless children and families with the support they need to get back on their feet. In the House, Davis has introduced legislation to do just that. More than 40 organizations across the country, including First Focus, National PTA, YMCA of the USA, National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth, and many others, support the approach Mr. Davis’s bill takes to strengthening the definition of homelessness.
We know we can rely on his continued leadership to ensure that federal policy meets the needs of homeless children and families, not bureaucrats in Washington. And he should be commended and praised for his efforts.”

I am pleased to announce the hiring of Jeremy Hughes as the campaign manager for my 2008 re-election campaign. Jeremy, a Fleming County native and graduate of Morehead State University, most recently worked for the Republican Party of Kentucky in 2006 and 2007. He played a key role in leading our efforts at the Northern Kentucky RPK Victory office in those years. Jeremy is a lifelong resident of the 4th District. His knowledge of the district and experience in grassroots politics will be extremely helpful to my re-election effort.

Mike Duncan is doing great work as Chairman of the Republican National Committee. The Hill’s Sam Youngman reports on Mike’s work preparing for the 2008 Presidential Race. Read the entire article here. Duncan continually brought up Clinton and Obama during a Wednesday morning breakfast with reporters sponsored by The Christian Science Monitor. Pointing to internal poll numbers, the RNC chairman repeatedly insisted that no matter who Republicans nominate, the Democratic candidate can be defeated in November. Internal RNC polls show Clinton has significant trust issues with voters, who also worry Obama has too little experience to be president. “With Sen. Clinton, it comes down to trust,” Duncan said. “She’s a lifelong liberal politician with some political baggage.” …. “His rhetoric is very good. He’s a great speaker. But at the end of the speech, people go, ‘Where’s the beef?’ ” Duncan said. …. The chairman said the committee’s voter file and 72-hour program are both better than they have ever been, and the RNC will continue to enjoy a technological advantage over its Democratic counterpart.
